AgeWell

Programming your fitness journey for the healthiest future you.

With a team of three, I designed a custom fitness programming application MVP for those interested in longevity that tailors your workout routine towards the goals you have as you age into your later years.

OVERVIEW

AgeWell is an iOS application that offers customized fitness programming based on goals around longevity and healthspan. AgeWell aims to provide users with personalized fitness plans tailored to their individual needs and goals, with the ultimate goal of helping them live healthier and longer lives. Through a user-friendly interface and easy-to-follow workouts, AgeWell aims to make it easy for users to stay on track and achieve their health and wellness goals. In this case study, we will explore the design process behind AgeWell, including user research, prototyping, and testing, and discuss the challenges and successes we encountered along the way.

CHALLENGE

The challenge of our project was to develop a product with an ultimate business partner in mind. We identified aging and longevity as the problem space we wanted to tackle and dug deeper from that starting point. Ultimately, we determined our goal to be to help people at all levels of experience approach fitness from a healthspan-focused perspective and meet them where they are. Our challenge statement was:

"How might we help users program an effective workout routine to allow them to
achieve the physical goals they have in their later years?"

THE SOLUTION

​We worked to deliver a product with clear, guided fitness programming to improve healthspan and longevity with features including:

"AgeWell Score": a composite score to quickly view progress towards longevity goals

Customized programming that adapts over time based on user inputs and trends

Workouts you can follow along with that include clear instruction for safety

In-app achievement badges to motivate users to continue with their routine

USER INTERVIEWS
GOAL OF RESEARCH

The goal of conducting our research was to gather insights and feedback from potential users about their needs, goals, and expectations around fitness and longevity. This research served to either validate or invalidate the assumptions and biases we as researchers had going into the research phase before we sat down to ideate on design solutions.

WHO ARE WE DESIGNING FOR? 

After conducting user interviews and synthesizing our research findings into key takeaways, we put together a fictitious user persona to represent the users whom we spoke to during interviews and to serve as a guidepost as we entered the ideation and design phase.

WHERE CAN WE HELP OUR PERSONAS?

With our persona in mind, we developed a journey map to understand the emotional curve that Jessica faces during the progression of finding and sticking with a workout routine. This helped our team identify the points in the process where there was room for improvement.

Prior to moving into the design phase, we developed a set of product principles to serve as guidelines that help shape the design of a product. They would serve as a foundation for decision-making during the design process and ensure that the final product would meet the needs and expectations of its intended audience.

FEATURE PRIORITIZATION

Prior to building out our designs in Figma, our team spent time ideating on potential features for application according to the product principles we laid out in a feature prioritization exercise. The feature prioritization matrix is a tool that would assist us in prioritizing features and functionality for the product based on their relative importance and impact. It helped to ensure that our limited resources were focused on the most valuable and impactful features, which can help to improve the overall user experience and the chances of success for the product.

DESIGN STUDIO

Prior to developing our mid-fidelity designs to test on with users, our team spent time ideating in a formal design studio. During this time we sketched ideas for the pages that needed to be created to allow for the key features laid out above and to dump as many ideas on the table as we could before we ultimately pared them down to our final choices.

MID FIDELITY USABILITY TESTING

With our primary functionality determined and our mid-fidelity prototype complete, we decided to runa. round of usability testing with users to gain some insight into how users moved through three tasks that we developed to understand the user-friendliness of some of the most significant features of the application. Those tasks can be found with their corresponding screen flows below.

Confusion about why the onboarding sequence was required to get started

HIGH FIDELITY USABILITY TESTING

Taking the insights from mid-fidelity usability testing into consideration, we brought our designs up to high fidelity including the necessary changes. Below you can find the updated designs.

OUTCOMES + NEXT STEPS
LIMITATIONS

With additional time, we would have loved the ability to run another round of usability testing with the insights taken from the second round of high fidelity usability testing as well as add additional tasks to test some of the secondary functionality of the application.

Add a "Save Workout" feature to allow the user to create a library of their favorite workouts.

A feature to allow users to swap their scheduled workout for something else they might prefer

A feature to allow the user to enter any current or past injuries account for in the programming.

WHAT DID I LEARN?

Through the process of completing the Agewell project, I gained valuable experience and insights in a variety of areas related to UX design. I learned the importance of conducting market and user research to understand the needs and motivations of my target audience, and how to use design studios and other ideation techniques to generate and evaluate potential design solutions. I also learned the value of conducting usability testing to identify and address any issues with the design before it is finalized. I became familiar with the process of creating wireframes and prototypes at different levels of fidelity, and how these can be used to communicate and test different design concepts. I also saw firsthand the role of user feedback in shaping and refining the final design of the application. Overall, completing this project provided me with a deeper understanding of the UX design process and the various considerations and techniques involved in creating effective and user-centered designs.
